things i love: a quick patio door transformation

The exterior doors on our deck take quite a beating. There isn’t any overhead protection, so they take direct sunlight and whatever weather North Carolina decides to throw at them. They were starting to reflect the abuse they’d been put through.

The handles were also wearing down, and one of the acrylic handles snapped in half. Luckily, some copper pipe we had in our shed was the right size to replace it.

So, I replaced both handles, which was really quite simple, and just involved removing the screws that held the handle to the door, cutting the copper pipe to the right length with a pipe cutter, and making the swap before re-attaching the handles.

Next it was time to refresh the paint. I wiped down the doors and taped everything off, making sure to protect the siding all around the door, and then used a high-heat spray paint.

I applied two coats of the paint and at the end it looked like we had two brand new doors.

We had also previously replaced the old, worn-out light fixtures with some new ones from Lowes.

For less than $60, it feels like quite a nice upgrade. (Here’s a link to the light from Lowes). The entire make-over, from the paint, to the light, to the copper handles was less than $100, and took very little time.

Are there any quick, inexpensive projects you’ve completed around your space that had a big impact? I love hearing about the projects people tackle.
